What's the Difference Between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO gets your page ranking in traditional search results. AEO structures that content to win featured snippets and 'People Also Ask' boxes. GEO goes a step further, structuring content so AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity actually cite it in a generated answer. They build on each other — GEO doesn't work without solid SEO underneath it.

Three layers, not three competing strategies

SEO, AEO, and GEO get talked about like separate disciplines, but they're really three layers stacked on top of each other. Skipping the foundation to chase the newest layer is why a lot of "GEO strategies" don't actually work.

SEO: getting found at all

Search engine optimization is the foundation — technical health (a site that loads fast and crawls cleanly), on-page structure (real headings, real content depth), and enough authority that Google trusts the page to rank for a given search. Without this, nothing above it matters.

AEO: winning the answer, not just the click

Answer engine optimization structures content to appear in the search results that answer a question before someone clicks through at all — featured snippets, "People Also Ask" boxes, AI Overviews. This means writing content that states a direct, self-contained answer near the top of the page, not burying it three paragraphs into a story.

GEO: getting cited by AI systems directly

Generative engine optimization is the newest layer — structuring content so tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity actually cite your page when a user asks them a question, rather than the AI answering from its own training data or a competitor's page. This depends heavily on the same things AEO rewards: clear, direct, well-organized answers, plus real authorship and credibility signals AI systems weigh when deciding what to trust.

Why the order matters

A page with no real SEO foundation — thin content, no technical health — rarely gets crawled deeply enough to be considered for AEO or GEO in the first place. Chasing AI citations without the SEO and content-quality work underneath is building the third floor before the first two exist.

The practical takeaway

If you're only going to invest in one thing first, it's still SEO. AEO and GEO are what you layer on once the foundation is solid — not a shortcut around it.
